Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
