In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
