Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
