A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
